“Adolescence is the time when the child enters the state of [adult]hood and becomes a member of society…[It] is a state of expectation, a tendency towards creative work and a need for the strengthening of self-confidence…[and] achieving economic independence.”

Program Overview

The Montessori Secondary program for ages 12 – 18 years (US Grades 7 – 12), is a dynamic learning environment that integrates rigorous academics with purposeful work, preparing teenagers to become confident, contributing citizens who possess the skills to thrive in society.

Aligned to US state standards the curriculum is delivered through direct instruction, project-based learning and interdisciplinary projects. In High School, students have the option to pursue Advanced Placement courses and examinations.

Responding to the adolescent’s need to exhibit creativity, claim independence and engage with contemporary global issues, students manage a business, design global projects, plan field trips and make decisions about their learning environment.

Three-way Approach to Learning

Our 3-way approach to teaching and learning promotes deeper, more rigorous academics. Direct instruction is effective for understanding surface-level information and provides the tools for deeper exploration through project-based learning (PBL) and Interdisciplinary Projects (IDPs). PBLs typically frame the learning within one subject and begin with a driving question for students to address through an extended process of collaborative inquiry. IDPs, chosen and designed by the students, are effective in understanding interdependence and urgent global topics. Issues such as Climate Change, Racism and Articial Intellignce are explored through multiple subjects.

Music

The Secondary music program emphasizes practical performance skills and creative compositional skills. With the modern band component, students have the opportunity to grow and perform on modern band instruments using student relatable songs.

With the composition component, students utilize technology as a platform for their creative musical endeavors. Combined, students acquire the tools and skills to become global musicians.

Drama

Secondary students spearhead annual school performances, taking on roles in all areas of production. This includes script- writing, directing, performing, backstage management, scenery and prop production and marketing.

This creative process provides students with the opportunity to be challenged in their area of interest and to develop their skills as community leaders and role- models.

Arts

The Visual Arts program nurtures art appreciation by enabling students to understand and explore art theory and history, develop their artistic skills and further their creative thinking skills.

Students experience and engage with a wide range of art forms including painting, drawing, ceramics and sculpture. Addtionally through interdisciplinary projects, students engage with contemporary global issues through the medium of art.

Sports

The goal of our Physical Education Curriculum is to introduce students to physical and personal wellness activities and athletic skills as a means of self expression and to encourage an active lifestyle, lifelong interests, and a commitment to personal health and well being. In addition to regular sports such as basketball, football and badminton, students are challenged with alternative activites inlcuding paddle boarding, kayaking, ice-skating, running and cycling.

🔍 Excursions

Secondary students explore the outside world to extend their knowledge and experiences. There are school organized trips and student organized trips. Students have gone on camping trips, city and museum explorations, visits to local businesses, ecology study trips, amongst others. For a global perspective, overseas trips immerse students in diverse cultures. These adventures weave learning, cultural appreciation, and personal growth into unforgettable experiences.
